Deichkind, a Hamburg-based Hip-Hop and Electropunk formation, comprises lead vocalist and MC Philipp Grütering and MC Sebastian "Porky" Dürre. Responsible for the creation of their dynamic shows is Henning Besser, alias DJ Phono, operating under the pseudonym "La Perla" in this collaboration.
The band gained initial success around the turn of the millennium with the single "Bon Voyage" (featuring Nina). Throughout the 2000s, their style incorporated increasingly electronic elements. Notable examples of their electro-influenced Hip-Hop sound include the chart-topping singles "Remmidemmi (Yippie Yippie Yeah)" (2006), "Arbeit nervt" (2008), and "Leider geil" (2012).
The distinctive symbol of the band since 2006 has been a tetrahedron-shaped hat, prominently featured in numerous music videos and worn by the members during live performances.
Band History:
Deichkind was formed in 1997 or 1999 in Hamburg-Bergedorf and initially included Philipp Grütering, Malte Pittner, and Bartosch "Buddy" Jeznach. Their debut album "Bitte ziehen Sie durch" was released on May 29, 2000. The breakthrough came with the single "Bon Voyage," which received significant airplay on MTV and VIVA.
Over the years, the band underwent lineup changes, and their second album, "Noch fünf Minuten Mutti," continued the success initiated by the debut. The addition of bassist Sebastian "Porky" Dürre in 2005 marked a significant development in the band's composition.
Concept and Style:
Texts: The band is characterized by ironic, humorous, and sometimes demonstratively "prollig" (brash) lyrics, occasionally delving into serious or melancholic themes. Early albums featured skits portraying scenes from Hamburg's daily life.
Music: Deichkind's musical evolution traces a shift from traditional rap to an electronic-infused sound. The transition to "Tech-Rap" is attributed to pivotal tracks like "Limit" (2002) and "Electric Super Dance Band" (2005). The band incorporated punk influences, resulting in a faster, break-laden sound evident in albums like "Aufstand im Schlaraffenland" (2006).
Live Performances: Known for their extravagant shows, Deichkind transforms their performances into what they humorously term an "adult birthday party," characterized by elaborate costumes made from unconventional materials and extensive crowd engagement. Custom-built stage elements, such as the patented "Omnipods," add to the uniqueness of their live experience.
