The Analogues: A Tribute Act Resurrecting the Beatles' Legacy

The Analogues, a Dutch tribute act founded in 2014, have carved their niche by faithfully resurrecting the music of the Beatles, specifically from their later studio years. Unlike typical tribute bands, The Analogues focus on recreating the Beatles' sound through live performances of songs and entire albums that the legendary band never played live themselves.

Touring Highlights

From 2015 to 2016, The Analogues embarked on their first tour, enchanting audiences in the Netherlands and abroad with live renditions of the Magical Mystery Tour album. The band's commitment to authenticity reached new heights in 2017 when they toured with a complete performance of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Notably, they celebrated the album's 50th anniversary with a performance at the Amsterdam Ziggo Dome, a venue with a capacity of 17,000.

The band's meticulous approach to their craft was documented in a one-hour broadcast by Dutch public-service broadcaster NTR. The documentary highlighted the exhaustive process of analyzing the Beatles' compositions, experimenting with studio equipment, and acquiring period-accurate instruments for their rendition of the Sgt. Pepper's album.

Continuing their journey, The Analogues toured extensively from 2018 to 2019, captivating audiences in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and the UK with live performances of The Beatles, also known as The White Album.

Recordings and Instruments

The Analogues signed a six-record deal with Universal Music Group, producing five live-played Beatles albums and one album featuring original material inspired by the Beatles.

To authentically replicate the Beatles' sound, The Analogues have assembled a collection of musical instruments, including replicas of John Lennon's black-and-white Rickenbacker guitar and George Harrison's light blue Fender Stratocaster. They also incorporate exotic instruments from India, such as the dilruba, swarmandal, tanpura, tabla, and sitar into their performances. Specialized instruments like a one-meter-long harmonica for "The Fool on the Hill" and a clavioline for "Baby, You're a Rich Man" add unique layers to their sound.

Bass guitarist and producer Bart van Poppel serves as the band's primary analyst, meticulously studying the arrangements and consulting references like Beatles Gear to acquire specific equipment, such as a 1965 Lowrey Heritage Deluxe organ or rare mellotrons used in iconic Beatles songs.

Critical Acclaim

The Analogues have received praise for their uncanny ability to recreate the Beatles' sound. Het Parool, in 2014, described their Magical Mystery Tour premiere as "eerily close" to the original. De Volkskrant in 2015 stated that the band brought the Beatles' sound back to life "frighteningly well." The Eastern Daily Press, in 2016, referred to their performance as a "musical wonder" and a "truly magical experience."

Personnel

The current lineup of The Analogues includes Jac Bico on guitar and vocals, Fred Gehring on drums and vocals, Felix Maginn on guitars and vocals, Diederik Nomden on keys, guitar, and vocals, and Bart van Poppel on bass, keys, and vocals, also serving as the producer. Former member Jan van der Meij contributed to the band on guitar and vocals in the past.
